Education & community

Absolute Theatre has regularly delivered training and education programmes which often include a performance element. The company has developed close links with schools and colleges in London and further afield, leading to several site-specific residency projects. These include ‘The Crowgate’ (Newham, East London) by Peter Cann, a large-scale sung-through piece with a cast of 600 young people aged 4 to 16 and ‘Jericho Stone’, staged at the Edna Manley College in Kingston, Jamaica.

The project ‘Portland Stories/Quarters Kids’ (Dorset) involved collecting oral histories for a wide-ranging archive, dance pieces and a site-specific promenade drama in the Governor’s Garden and Borstal Club, Portland.

Our 2018 collaboration with Walnut Tree Walk Primary School and the Vauxhall Gardens Community Centre resulted in ‘Vauxhall Times’ – a one-off newspaper and a performance/dance piece. This led to the creation of ‘Because I’m A Londoner’, working with years 4-6 in three primary schools in different boroughs, which enabled participants to express, through drama, music, dance and film, what being part of London meant to them. These were both funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
Our new performance projects ‘The Story Tree’ and ‘The Pirates of the River Lea’ were staged by Cleves and Monega Primary Schools between December 2022 and July 2023.

The company continues to offer theatre workshops and individual tuition for professionals and non-professionals, of all ages and in all circumstances. The sessions are geared towards a fun, lively and supportive atmosphere in which to learn about acting, building self-confidence and self-expression or to revitalise specific performance skills. We offer carefully tailored presentation workshops for individuals or groups. Sessions can examine general aspects of presentation or concentrate on a particular area, such as work with voice, body language and supporting personality and natural confidence.

Absolute’s creative team brings a considerable wealth of experience and skills, as well as a shared enthusiasm for encouraging engagement with performance at any level and in any environment.
